QUALIFYING

Players must enter through the host State/Territory Association or Bowls Australia’s Last Chance qualifying by the nominated closing date, which can be found below.

State based qualifying
A player may attempt to qualify in more than one qualifying event around Australia, with the exception of Last Chance qualifying (explained below). An entry fee will be required to be paid for each qualifying event entered.
Once a player has qualified in a particular discipline for the Australian Open, that player may not enter in any further qualifying events for that discipline. Attempting to qualify with a secondary team will result in that team being disqualified from that event. This is a change from 2012.

Last Change qualifying

This event will be played as straight knockout due to the large number of entrants.

Entries
All entries are now closed.

Entry fees

Bowls Australia entry fees are as follows:

  • Singles - $30
  • Pairs - $40
  • Triples - $50

Total entry fees are a calculation of the Bowls Australia fees above plus any green fees to be paid as determined by the State Associations.

Minimum entries

For any qualifying position to be awarded, there is a minimum number of entries required. Should this number not be reached, the position for that gender / discipline / state will not be granted. This will be decided once entries have closed.

Singles: 8 entries
Pairs: 6 entries (6 teams, 12 individuals)
Triples: 4 entries (4 teams, 12 individuals)

Direct entries

Direct entries will be awarded to outstanding players who will be seen to enhance the event, at the discretion of Bowls Australia. Any direct entry positions not awarded or accepted by the close of entries of the last qualifying event will become qualifying positions.

Direct entry into the singles draw will also be provided to the top-12 men’s players and top-8 women’s players on the Bowls Australia singles rankings as of December 31, 2012. Any position not accepted through this process will be allocated as another position into the Last Chance qualifying event.

Men's singles
Mark Casey (AUS) - defending champion

Women's singles
Lynsey Armitage (AUS) - defending champion

Men's pairs
Leif Selby and Nathan Rice (AUS) - defending champions

Women's pairs
Victoria Troster and Elise Cowan (AUS) - defending champions

Men's triples
Ray Lawerson, James Pearce and Alan Dove (AUS) - defending champions

Women's triples
Kelsey Cottrell, Anne Johns and Lynsey Armitage (AUS) - defending champions

Eligibility
Any player who attempts to qualify for the pairs or triples and is unsuccessful, is then ineligible to be a replacement player for a team in the main draw. The player must qualify in their own right in another qualifying event to be allowed to play in the main draw.

Allocation of qualifying positions

The number of qualifying positions in each state or territory will be determined based on entries received in the qualifying events for the 2012 Australian Open.

Please note that Mixed Pairs is now included in the Australian Open as a Bowls Australia event. Qualifying positions have been allocated as a result of this.
